With the recent tragedy that struck Japan, there had been a false text message circulating the metro today. Whoa! I was able to receive that text message while I was in a meeting this morning. Anyways, the message goes….

“BBC FLASH NEWS: Japan govt cnfirms radiation leak at Fukushima Nuclear Plant. Asian countries should take necessary precautions. Remain indoors first 24 hours. Close doors n windows. Swab neck skin with betadine where thyroid area is, radiation hits thyroid first. Take extra precaution, radiation may hit Phils. starting 4pm today. Pls send to ur loved ones.”

When I read the message, I didn’t believe it. (Maybe because I was surfing BBC & CNN before my meeting or the message was just to ridiculous to believe). Unfortunately, the said text message caused some panic. Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP) sent its students home at 2pm. According to the news, the president of the said school decided to call off the classes because their office was bombarded by phone from parents of the students. Just to calm everyone down, they decided to suspend their afternoon classes. TOINK!

Let’s all be responsible when sending or forwarding text messages especially in a time where communication is vital. Before forwarding the text as the message said, let’s take time out first in verifying the news before spreading the news.
